Personal Fears is a jewelry brand that produces jewelry out of the highest quality surgical grade stainless steel to avoid green skin and irritation. Why Stainless steel? Because it's a hypoallergenic metal alloy that contains a high percentage of chromium, which forms a protective layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the metal. This layer makes the surface hypoallergenic because the layer does not react with the skin or any body fluids, which prevents irritation and allergic reactions. Stainless steel is also nonporous and does not trap bacteria, which prevents skin irritation and infections. So what causes green skin and irritation from jewelry made of other metals? It is caused by a chemical reaction between metals such as copper and the acids in sweat. This reaction can be made worse by different factors such as humidity, chemicals, and individual skin chemistry. Since stainless steel is not reactive to the acids in the skin's sweat it does not form green discoloration and irritation. We want to create safe accessible jewelry for everyone and using a non reactive and nonporous metal like stainless steel helps us achieve this mission.
